Hi and welcome to LL’s Organics Blog.
We are Greg & Elizabeth; we met way back in 2001 and were married in 2003. We were your normal couple living in the USA loving the Standard American Diet (SAD) and loving it. Thinking nothing of buying the awesomely convenient box dinner off the shelf from out local mega mart, to save 30 minutes or more when we got home was the best things since sliced bread. Saving time was key when trying to work full time and raise a family, we had a pantry full of boxes, cans, bags of pre-prepared time saving food and we were happy as pigs in mud. We met while working at Wendy’s and for the better part of a year back then that’s what we survived on, fast food. Not thinking that it wasn’t really food, I mean that’s what the government does right…? Protect us from harmful things in our food and environment; well that’s what we thought for the longest time. There would be no way a company could sell food to harm us, I mean unhealthy food yes, but chemical laden harmful food NO WAY!!
Unfortunately most Americans think the way we did, so that’s one reason for this blog. To help others who were like us realize you have to take your diet and health of yourself and of your children into your own hands. We were scared when we first started out, unsure of what to buy or how to start to truly eat healthy. We made (and still make) mistakes, we are still learning new things till this day, but we have come really far in the last 2 almost 3 years. We transitioned from the SAD into pretty much 100% Organic eating, 100% natural and sustainable vegan personal care items, we generally care more for the environment; we recycle more, use less, and try to live as simply as we can. Our goal in all this is to educate, share, encourage, empower, and to offer certain items we have come to love (whether made by us or another company).
So back to us, you already know we met while working at a fast food chain in 2001, then tied the knot in 2003. Life has thrown us its fair share of curve balls but after all things said and done we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than right where we are; by each other’s side. We are each other’s best friend, literally each other’s other half , we have recently joined a church close to our home and now we can truly see how perfect our marriage can really be when we focus on God first. We always had a pretty good marriage or so we thought, we always prayed and discussed God and religion, but church and putting God first wasn’t out main focus. We centered our focus on each other, now that we have realigned that focus life is getting better than we could ever have expected it to.
When we met we never thought 13 years later we would end up here, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. When we met we were clueless to food so we ate anything and let our kids do the same. It wasn’t until our last child that we started to pay more attention, (I blame the internet LoL). We had 2 sons and desperately wanted a girl, but never really felt like it was the right time to try. I got news for you guys out there if you try and wait for the “perfect time” to have a child that “perfect” time will never come, so just do it and enjoy. I the husband wish I would have said yes to the Misses sooner. She read books, blogs, magazines, and who knows what else on the art of making a baby girl. I joke saying the time of conception for my daughter was more like setting the time on a VCR (if you’re born after the 80’s you won’t get that joke sorry) than a fun activity. Honestly though it was all a blessing from God, we prayed and prayed for a daughter. We prayed down to every last detail that we wanted, I wanted her to have my wife’s beautiful brown eyes and curly hair, she wanted her to have my whit and brain, I wanted her to be a true girly girl, we both wanted a self-reliable strong willed daughter, and I can tell you this God answered every prayer with a yes. We got everything we wanted. A few small complications the last trimester of the pregnancy and one extra day in the hospital after deliver, but it was all such a blessing and an answer to our prayers and for that we are forever grateful.
So after all the years of wanting this and finally being blessed with the perfect little girl, how could we not want the best for her? It all started with a simple google search “What is the best first homemade baby food?” I read blogs and forums for weeks before we were going to introduce solids into our little ones diet. I read about bananas, sweet potatoes, and avocados being the best first treat for our munchkin, but one word kept popping up “ORGANIC”. I thought why is it so important that they must mention it over and over again. Isn’t the fruit and veggies in the produce section of the mega mart perfectly fine? They grow on trees and vines grown from the dirt isn’t that organic? So me being analytical I do what I do best, research! So I blame my daughter for turning me in the person I am today and boy am I glad. My friends or strangers might call me weird or whatever, but I tell them what is in their food, what a better alternative is, where they can source this, why it is important to maintain their health instead of try to regain it later, and most importantly testimony (not just with food, but with Jesus Christ).
I’m a passionate person so I can’t just stop with a few google searches and be satisfied. I read and watched everything I could about organics and proper diets. Hours upon hours were spent doing this. I finally realized there was a flaw in our food system. So we walked into a store that we once thought was weird and way overpriced. This was a smaller grocery store that we ran into once to pick up a drink but couldn’t find any soda or anything familiar so we grabbed coconut water that was nasty and vowed to never go there again. As we walk back into this store feeling super out of place we see their produce department and head straight for the sweet potatoes and bananas. After noticing how much more expensive then the mega mart we wandered around the store looking at all the crazy stuff on the shelves. Fast forward 2.5 years now and we are regulars in this same store, 95% of all our shopping is done there and most of the weird things are now in my pantry or on my counter. We know the employees and are on a first name basis and share personal life stories with them and vice versa and honestly can say we LOVE that store. If you have a Nutrition S’mart close to you please go check them out, amazing prices, and great quality!
So after returning home we ring out our steamer and baby bullet to steam up some sweet potatoes. Now it just so happens that sweet potatoes and bananas are some of my favorite fruits and veggies. So we had some from the mega mart and some that were organic. It was blind taste test time. I cut up some banana and made the Misses go in the other room and close her eyes, after her picking the organic as the sweeter and best tasting out of the two it was my turn. Wouldn’t you know it I did the same, the organic not only tasted better but the texture was smooth and not gritty. Ok now for the sweet potato, sure enough the organic won again. So we started buying the dirty dozen organic, and stopped with all the boxed food. Over the next year we stopped shopping at the mega mart and more at Nutrition S’mart. I thought since we were eating some organic what was the sense in eating anything conventional? No reason to half way do something, not in my blood. So we started to phase out everything that wasn’t organic. For the next year we experimented with all things organic, and found our favorites and also found ourselves still eating junk food organic but still junk food. So then the change came to phase out everything that had a barcode, so now we are down to about 10 items or less that have a barcode in our kitchen. We are eating more whole foods than ever and still growing. We cut out red meat and pork when we started this journey. Now we are almost done with dairy (which is the hardest thing for myself the wife because I LOVE cheese and can not get enough of it) and poultry is up next to leave our diet. We plan to be pescitarian by years end with a goal to become raw food vegan in 2 years or so.
So along the way we have made mistakes and learned what we thought was something we were doing right could actually be done better. Our goal is to share this with you. We have plans to start to offer products that we make and our friends love or that we love but can’t find on store shelves…eventually. The main goal is to inform. I the husband loves to cook, tackle DIY projects, and all things in-between, so you will see that on here for sure, My wonderful wife loves to bake, craft, and so much more so you will see that on here too. Mix in our kids, daily life, and love for Christ will be sure to lead to a full blog that is all over the place. We promise to always stay real, open our lives to you, and share everything we think you would like to know. If you can’t tell I the husband can get on a roll and keep talking and talking.. I mean this was supposed to be a short bio and well….you see what happen.
We pray you enjoy this blog and our journey!!
